As always, we kept a close eye on September's fashion month. And as we’d hoped and predicted, age representation continued and increased.
Saint Laurent, Gabriela Hearst, SS Daley, Marques' Almedia , Rick Owens, Chopova Lowena and Ferragamo were just some that featured older models, and Miu Miu & Balmain both continued their commitment to age inclusivity. Willem Dafoe walked for the former, and Paulina Porizkova the latter. And whilst Batsheva Hay's show wasn’t just 40+ this time, she did feature a range of ages-a next step for age inclusivity. Meanwhile Sunnei took a note out of Hay’s AW24 book, dedicating an entire show to featuring older models.
There is still a strong argument for tokenism & performative gestures, not to mention the lack of diversity amongst older models, especially when it comes to size & being differently abled. What’s more, several of the major fashion houses such as Dior, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Burberry are lagging behind. And whilst Dolce & Gabbana's show was dedicated to Madonna who sat front row – but wouldn’t have been more exciting & meaningful with fellow older women had walking in the show too?!
But we remain optimistic. If anyone is proof that older representation is both important and can appeal to all ages it’s the late Dame Maggie Smith.
That being said, there is a long way with how we TALK about age, with both brands and the media who are seemingly being “age positive” still using outdated narratives or even offensive terms. So much education is needed here.
