Today on International Day of Older Persons we are pleased to announce the new official 6th pillar of our Manifesto: Education.
Because at Ageism Is Never In Style®, we believe education is the foundation of change.
To drive and enact lasting, impactful and sustainable change around ageism and age-inclusivity, it is crucial that all work and acts must be thoroughly informed through critical thinking, empathy and understanding.
And whilst education has always been at the core of all our work, we feel it’s important to specifically identify it as a new Manifesto pillar.
Through research, surveys, teachings, workshops, consultancy, advocacy, public speaking, discussions & more, we remain committed to always learning and evolving - and imparting this knowledge and education onto others.
It feels particularly apt for International Day of Older Persons, with this year’s theme 'Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.'
As per the UN, the aim of this year is "to highlight the urgent need to expand training and educational opportunities in geriatrics and gerontology, address the global shortage of care workers, and recognize the diverse contributions of caregivers”.
“With our population ageing, and by 2030 older persons are projected to outnumber youth globally - with this increase most rapid in developing countries - this demographic shift has significantly transformed the caregiving landscape, encompassing a wide range of needs for both paid and unpaid support in formal and informal settings.”
At Ageism Is Never In Style we are committed to supporting those in this space, both internally and externally, through our campaigning, consultancy and community. And we are proud to further society’s recognition, visibility and contributions of older persons; examine issues that affect their lives - both today and tomorrow; and transform narratives around them, as we continue our unwavering mission to forge a truly age-inclusive and equitable society.
